It was founded in the 7th or 8th BC. century. In the place where Ancient Pandosia was founded in the 7th BC. (or according to others in the 8th century BC), there seems to have been a local small town settlement of unknown name. Its earliest present walls date to the first half of the 4th century BC, and certainly before 360 BC, but this is not documented. Ancient Pandosia was accessed by sea and via the navigable Acheron river, which in Kastri is only 100–200 m from the fortified city.
