Historic Komeno Village

Kommeno, Arta is a historic village in Epirus, built near the Arachthos River and known nationwide for one of the most tragic events of the German occupation of Greece. The village is associated with the Kommeno Massacre, which took place on August 16, 1943 by German occupation troops. On that day, the Germans invaded the village and massively executed civilian residents, including women, children and the elderly, in retaliation for the presence of guerrillas in the area. Within a few hours, hundreds of people lost their lives and a large part of the village was completely destroyed. The Kommeno Massacre is considered one of the most horrific war crimes committed in Greece during World War II. Today, Kommeno is a place of historical memory and honor for the victims of the occupation. In the village there are monuments and places dedicated to the executed residents, while every year commemorative events are held to honor their sacrifice and keep the historical memory alive. Kommeno, Arta is a historic village in Epirus, built in a fertile area near the Arachthos River and a short distance from the Amvrakikos Gulf. It is a place with a strong agricultural tradition, natural beauty and deep historical significance, as it has been linked to one of the most tragic events of the German occupation of Greece during World War II. The village became known throughout the country due to the Massacre of Kommeno, which took place on August 16, 1943 by the German occupation troops. At that time, in the wider region of Epirus there was intense activity of resistance groups and the occupation forces often carried out harsh reprisals against civilian populations. At dawn on August 16, German forces surrounded Kommeno and attacked the residents by surprise. The soldiers invaded the houses and began to execute indiscriminately men, women, the elderly and young children. The village that day was full of people, as there had been a wedding and many families were gathered for the celebration. The massacre was shocking. More than 300 civilian residents were murdered with extreme brutality, while many houses were burned and completely destroyed. Among the victims were infants, children and entire families who disappeared within a few hours. This event left an indelible mark on the history of Epirus and is considered one of the greatest war crimes committed in Greece during the occupation. Despite the enormous destruction, the residents of Kommenos managed to rebuild the village after the war and keep the memory of the victims alive. Today, the village has monuments, inscriptions and memorial sites dedicated to the executed residents. The central monument of the Massacre is a place of emotion and respect for visitors from all over Greece. Every year, events of remembrance and honor are held, in which residents, organizations and visitors participate, in order to keep the historical memory alive and to convey to the younger generations the message of peace and human dignity. In addition to its heavy historical heritage, Kommeno maintains to this day the authentic character of the Epirus countryside. The fertile lands, the waters of Arachthos, the traditional crops and the hospitality of the residents create a beautiful natural environment that combines history with the daily life of the region. Kommeno in Arta is today an important place of historical memory for all of Greece, recalling the sacrifices of civilians during the war and the strength of a place that managed to be reborn from its ashes.
