One of the most important figures of the 16th century, after the fall of the Byzantine Empire, is Saint Maximus of Vatopedi, known in Russia as Maksim Grek, that is, Maximus the Greek. He was born in 1470 in Arta to wealthy and pious parents, Manuel and Irene Trivolis. His family maintained friendly relations with the last Byzantine emperors, Thomas and Constantine Palaiologos. His father was, before the fall of Arta (1449), the military commander of the city and then one of its lords. Maximus appeared as an enlightener of the Russians. On the land of Russia he endured his long martyrdom, but the people of Russia honored him and honors him as one of their great Saints. His work had a great influence in Russia for centuries on theology and Orthodox spiritual life.
